Most of us imagine winter as dull, grey, and lifeless right? Nothing but bare trees and barren flowerbeds.
Well, not anymore! We’ve put together a list of 10 vibrant and colorful flowers to plant in winter.
These little beauties will brighten up even the gloomiest of winter days!
1. Crocus
One of the first flowers to peek up out of the snow is the crocus. These dainty, cup-like flowers are tougher than they look and can easily withstand harsh winter temperatures.
2. Pansies
Pansies come in a wide array of colors that will add a cheerful pop of color to your garden.
Pansies bloom as early as December and flower for most of the winter. While they won’t survive the harsh snow, they can withstand a layer of frost.
3. Winter Aconite
It is so rewarding to see these electric yellow flowers pop up out of the snow. You will have to wait for February before they make an appearance, but they are well worth the wait.
The good news is, hungry critters won’t steal these flowers as rodents and deer tend to steer clear of Winter Aconite.
4. Lenten Roses
These dusty pink flowers bloom in early winter in mild climates and late winter in harsher climates.
The Lenten Rose, also called Hellebore, is fairly easy to grow. It thrives in the shade, so it is the perfect addition to a dull, gloomy flowerbed.
5. Holly
Holly is the quintessential plant for spreading holiday cheer. Holly easily withstands the harsh winter temperatures and rewards you with beautiful white flowers in the spring.
Keep in mind, only the female variants of this plant produce red berries.
6. Snowdrops
These delicate white and green buds pop out of the snow in late winter. Snowdrops, also called Galanthus, have drooping, bell-shaped flowers.
Snowdrops thrive in very cold climates, so if you live in Florida or Southern California, these frosty flowers are not for you.
7. Japanese Camellias
This beautiful shrub will add a touch of elegance to your garden. The fragrant flowers resemble roses and range in color from white to pink, to bright red.
The Japanese Camellia, sometimes called the rose of winter, is the official state flower of Alabama.
8. Violas
These pretty flowers are extremely popular, largely because each flower looks like a tiny little face. Violas will survive a light frost, and in mild climates, they will flower all winter long.
Each plant will only survive one season but don’t worry, they drop lots of seeds, so more violas are sure to sprout next year.
9. Christmas Roses
The Christmas rose, a relative of the Lenten Rose, has white bowl-like flowers that resemble wild roses. This flower gets its name as it bursts out of the snow right around Christmas time.
They thrive in protected, shady spots, so consider putting them on your patio. With a little help from Blue Oak Patios, who provide Patio Paver Ideas & Landscaping Services, your patio will be the prettiest in town!
10. Algerian Iris
These beautiful silvery-purple flowers give off a wonderful, sweet fragrance. Unlike other Iris plants, the Algerian Iris starts blooming as early as November and will bloom in your garden all winter long.
The seeds can be difficult to find online, but your local nursery may be able to track some down for you.
