My AC Is Freezing! Possible Causes and Fixes

Three-quarters of households in America own air conditioners. But, what do you do when it’s hot outside, and your air conditioner isn’t functioning correctly?

Are you having recurring issues with your air conditioner freezing or otherwise malfunctioning?

Read on for our guide to what to do if your AC is freezing.

What Causes an Air Conditioner to Freeze?

There are several possible problems that may cause your air conditioner to freeze. Dirty or blocked filters or air vents can cause major problems. That’s because blockage stops the flow of air.

The same is true if you have a clogged evaporator coil — it may just be dirty.

A leaking air conditioner could also cause an air conditioner to freeze. So, watch out for signs of frozen water on the AC. If your air conditioner is leaking something that isn’t water, turn it off and call the professionals immediately. It could be an AC refrigerant leak or other chemicals, which can be very dangerous.

Kinks in the air conditioner line or the hose could also cause your AC to freeze, since it redirects the airflow for the unit.  A problem with the fan inside the AC itself may also cause your unit to freeze.

How To Fix a Freezing Air Conditioner

There are a few simple options you can do to unfreeze your air conditioner.  If your filters are dirty, for example, try just cleaning them out.  For people who suspect there’s a problem with the fan, you should first make sure there’s nothing stuck in or otherwise impeding the fan.

If not, you may need the blower fan in your AC to be replaced. You can also search for “how to thaw an AC unit” if your air conditioner is completely iced over.

If your air conditioner is exhibiting other symptoms, like leaking, it may mean that a part in your air conditioner needs to be replaced. It could also mean, however, that your air conditioner is overheating. Try turning the unit off for a little while to give it a break.

If you think something may be leaking, unplug your air conditioner completely and leave it to dry out for a couple of days. That will reduce your chances of having electrical issues or other problems that could destroy your air conditioning unit entirely.

If there’s a kink in the hose or the line, it’s pretty simple to fix it and defrost your air conditioner. Simply straighten it out. If you’re not sure exactly what the problem is, call in an expert to perform an airflow inspection and see if they can diagnose the issue (and how to fix it).

Of course, sometimes it’s best to just call in the professionals. If you’re in the Ocala, Florida area, get your AC repaired today.
