Lookout for Molehills and Surface Tunnels
Perhaps the most well-known signs of moles are molehills and surface tunnels.
Moles dig burrows deep underground searching for earthworms and grubs in which to eat. But, they also dig temporary surface tunnels off these. You can see a surface tunnel because the grass has been raised.
If you start to see long patches of grass that are higher than the rest of the lawn, that usually a sign of moles.
Also, as moles create exit holes for the tunnels they create a mound of dirt, commonly known as molehills. These molehills are about 6 inches high and about the size of a soccer ball.
Watch For Dying Grass and Plants
Next on our list are signs which are not as well known as the previous two. They can also go unnoticed for long periods as people blame the weather or other animals for them.
As moles dig tunnels and burrow underground, they detach the roots from the plants. This of course kills the plants as they can no longer obtain water and nutrients to stay alive.
If your plants and grass suddenly start dying, and, it’s not from lack of care, you should start assuming that moles are the culprits.
Another sign of moles is an increase in roots around the garden. Because the grass and plants have died, it allows weeds to root instead. Make sure you keep an eye out for any new patches of weeds.
