Kribensis
The Kribensis is a type of fish originally from Africa that is a great fish to start your tank with. They are extremely calm and peaceful fish and measure only an inch or two long. Kribensis will stay in the lower part of the tank for the most part.
What’s the most interesting feature about this type of fish is how they herd their young around the tank. Females will take on a red or purple shade on their belly. They get along well with other fish, though they do tend to herd slower-moving and larger breeds.
Finally, Kribensis are also very easy to feed. As omnivores, they’ll eat almost anything you put in the tank. Just make sure to choose food that will sink instead of float, since they do spend most of their time at the bottom of the tank.

Neon Rainbowfish
Another great and colorful fish to start your tank out with are neon rainbowfish. These fish only reach about two inches in length and stay in the middle or top of your tank. This makes them a great match for a few Kribensis since they won’t take up the same territory.
Neon rainbowfish are an active and energetic species, which means that you will need a fairly large tank for them to swim around in. You’ll also want to make sure to not keep them in an open tank, as they can jump.
Like Kribensis, they will eat most foods, but you’ll want to have food that will float or at least sink slowly, as they will not eat from the bottom of the tank.
Cory Catfish
The Cory Catfish is another bottom-dwelling freshwater fish that is easy to care for. They’ll keep your tank clean and scavenge for food at the bottom, which means that any sunken food particles can get tossed up and move through the rest of your tank.
These are slow-moving, peaceful fish, and they can be shy at times. It’s likely not a good idea to combine the Cory Catfish with fast-moving and territorial smaller fish like the Kribensis.
What’s interesting about Cory Catfish is that they will sometimes go to the surface of your tank and take a large gulp of air. This makes an audible popping or snapping sound.
This is normal and will happen periodically throughout the day. Make sure that you don’t put these fish in a tank where they can’t reach the surface.
