Just because we love beauty in and around our homes doesn’t mean we want to toil and sweat over every chore. Curb appeal is just as important as that brand new kitchen counter or bathroom vanity.
So, while visions of azalea bushes and vegetable patches danced in our heads, we came upon several articles on artificial turf maintenance and, boy, were we sold. Below, we’d like to share some of our favorite finds regarding artificial grass.
Benefits of Artificial Grass
Grass that dries out and dies can be a huge headache to replace. Artificial grass doesn’t have that issue, and will also remain weed and pest free.
You’ll no longer have to spend an exorbitant amount of money on water. This reduces both time and water costs. If you live in areas that are prone to water restrictions, you won’t have to say sayonara to your front lawn.
Other long term savings include fertilizer and pesticides. You also won’t need to maintain or store a lawnmower (or pollute the air every time you run it).
Sounds pretty good, right? Here’s the icing on the cake: artificial grass can last up to 20 years if maintained right.
Maintenance Needs
Feel free to do a happy dance during the synthetic turf installation. But, it’s important to remember that, although artificial grass maintenance is very low, it’s not non-existent.
You might consider outdoor turf a bit like an outdoor carpet. As such, it’s still susceptible to stains. So, when your little one spills the kind of juice that never really comes out or your four-legged friend uses the facilities, you’ll need to respond quickly.
For smaller stains, like drinks and urine, you can sop it up with a paper towel and use a household cleaner on it. Stick with water and detergent if you can because it won’t damage the fibers.
For larger stains (say, if you get some motor oil on the grass), you can try ammonia or mineral spirits. If you start with ammonia, you’ll only want to do about three percent ammonia and 97 percent water.
Required Supplies
Although you can pitch the lawnmower, you definitely want to keep the hose. Some of those accidents like dog waste can be removed with a hose. And, after those barbecues and playdates, you might want to rinse it off anyway.
A leafblower wouldn’t hurt a thing to keep the green popping proudly, even when the leaves start to fall. You can also employ a plastic rake from time to time. Just make sure it’s a nice, synthetic plastic and not a harsh metal.
